Discovering the City of Fountains
(7/27/2006)
By Ed Littler
During his visit to Kansas City this week for the Big 12 football
media conference, News 5's Ed Littler did more than talk to football
players and coaches. He was able to admire some of Kansas City's
finest scenery and see first hand why that town is called the City
of Fountains.
The sound is unmistakable, the unending cascading water making
for a picture perfect site, also giving some the opportunity to
dip their feet into the water to cool off under the hot Kansas City
summer sun.
Bhilpena Sullivan and some of her family from Arizona are glad
to be entertained by something different for them.
“Well, you never see anything like this up in Arizona, so
take a few pictures, sent them back home,” said Sullivan.
Of the many beautiful fountains in Kansas City perhaps the most
famous is the Jesse Clyde Nichols Memorial Fountain, which was built
back in 1958, but that is far from the only one that we had an opportunity
to see here in this great city.
Further down Kansas City's Plaza there is the statue of Nepture,
God of the sea, with his horses leading the way and spouting the
water. Not far away, a statue of a woman spouting water from a horn,
a circular fountain below close to the sidewalk.
At the Cheescake Factory restaurant, customers also enjoy watching
the water. There is plenty of it to see, with the fountain covering
the courtyard.
“The fountains are nice, they are up and down the Plaza here
and everywhere you look, it is still nice to look at,” visitor
Cody Burns said.
“I like the design and I like the water and they are just
really pretty to see while you are down in the Plaza,” said
traveler Lauren Coleman.
Human beings are not the only living creatures to enjoy Kansas
City's fountain. Even one of our feathered friends took advantage
of the opportunity to cool off taking a drink from one of them.
